And Each Man Kills The Things He Loves

“And each man kills the thing he loves,
By all let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword.”
                                                           -Oscar Wilde

After reading these lines the first thing that came in to my mind is that why has Oscar Wilde written such poem even though he was best known personalities during his time? He was one of the popular play writers. ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ and ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’, are some of the notable books by him. Then why did he feel that each man kills the things he loves. Then I read about him. And I came to know that his life collapsed after his lawsuit. Wilde was the one who instigated the lawsuit and therefore contributed to his own downfall - he killed the thing he loved. After imprisonment he exiled himself for three years. Such was his life. His much acclaimed novel ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, was written by him during those days. Even though from outside we might find his life colorful, full of happiness, success. But from inside he was alone.

And this is what Drawing Blood is all about. All artists have to experience pain before giving the world a masterpiece. Because, there is no gain without pain. The movie is an emotional ride of colorless life of an artist. It reflects the process that artists have to go through in some way or the other. The director of the film, Maha said “Artists make colorful paintings but many of them lead a pale life. Painters / Artists are free birds of imagination and creation, they tend to picture moments that they experience or envision onto their canvas. If unsatisfied with their paintings, they can erase them and re-make them. But they cannot design their own real life incidents nor can they erase them or dispose them as they wish just as with paintings. Trying to understand some artist’s lives, I realized that if they haven’t felt or experienced “pain”, they cannot make “paintings”. These thoughts made me come up with the idea for Drawing Blood”.
